The Final 100 Days: October 21, 1918 - Preparations for Valenciennes

Archie MacDonnell’s 1st Division snaked through the Forét de Vicogne, reaching the Valenciennes-St. Amand Road by early morning. Later in the day, they were relieved by the 3rd Division, who had moved from their reserve just outside of Quéant.

For the 1st Division, this was the end of the war. They would not return to the front line.

On the right, the 4th Division was afforded no rest. Pushing north-eastwards from Denain, they covered good ground until halted by German machine-gun fire over the Canal de L’Escaut.

Action would resume the next day, as the Canadians drew ever closer to Valenciennes.
